Dean's Message
Welcome to the College of Engineering at UTSA, where education and research are our highest priorities and excellence is the motto. The college is the major public provider of undergraduate and graduate engineering education in South Texas with an enrollment exceeding 2000 students. We have seen an unprecedented 101% increase in enrollment over the past seven years and continue to grow steadily. Nationwide we are in the top ten for producing the most Hispanic engineers.
If you are looking for an exciting and rewarding career in the increasingly high-tech world of the 21st century, engineering is the correct choice and UTSA is the right place to be.
Our undergraduate programs in Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering are ABET accredited. The programs offer curricula that combine a strong theoretical background with hands-on experience in excellent labs, and focus on teamwork and communication skills. We emphasize close interaction with outstanding faculty to create an atmosphere conducive to learning. In the past seven years, we have increased our faculty by more than 100%.
At the graduate level we offer MS degrees in Biomedical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering. Our PhD programs include Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Environmental Science and Engineering. These graduate programs offer opportunities for advanced study and research designed to prepare students for leadership roles in engineering careers with industry, government, or educational institutions. They also provide a pathway toward self-improvement and life-long learning for practicing engineers. Over the past two years our graduate enrollment has increased by more than 50%.
Cutting-edge research in a wide range of areas such as structural/information security, environmental issues, materials, biomechanics, robotics, manufacturing, computational modeling, and sustainability is federally/state funded and contributes to maintain US competitiveness and security of the state and nation. To aid the economic development of the nation the College also works closely with industry. Since the year 2000 our annual research funding has increased by more than 700%.
UTSA has established a clear goal to become a top-tier research university. To support new research initiatives and accommodate the enrollment growth in 2006 we expanded into a new $84-million, 225,000-SF building, which is one of the largest educational buildings in the state of Texas and boasts state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities. Currently under construction is another 150,000sf Engineering Building II, which will open in 2009.
We are the fastest growing college of engineering in Texas. If you are looking for an exceptional engineering educational experience in one of the most diverse and beautiful cities in the United States, come join us as we shape the technology of tomorrow.
